Universal Design for Learning

Welcome Back!  This week we'll be discussing the Universal Design For Learning (UDL) framework and how it impacts the design of my lesson plan and the digital use divide.  The article I chose to read is:    Vasinda, S. and Pilgrim, J . (2021). Technology supports in the UDL framework: Removable scaffolds or permanent new literacies? Reading Research Quarterly, 58(1), 44 - 58. According to Vasinda and Pilgrim, UDL was developed to provide better quality instruction to learners with varying abilities and literacies. There are several ways for learners to access information and demonstrate understanding. Traditionally, the term "scaffolding" has been used to describe the framework used to give learners access to information. However, the authors argue that integrating technology into the classroom is not scaffolding; rather it is a new literacy option. During the civil rights movement, architects were inspired to provide universal access to public buildings fo...

AI Lesson Plan

Welcome back!  This week, we were asked to use Magic School AI to generate a lesson plan using AI. Part 1: https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/lesson-plan-generator?share=23ecc586-5203-4439-9d76-2d00c0ddf274 My evaluation of the lesson is that it does and excellent job addressing the state standard ( a. Explore the function of history and culture in the development of a dramatic concept through a critical analysis of original ideas in drama/theatre works from western or non-western theatre traditions), but falls short in the ISTE standard ( Students use effective  research strategies  to find  resources  that support their learning needs, personal interests and creative pursuits.). The lesson directly addresses the state standard by asking students to consider the concepts of societal norms, politics, and cultural values as they relate to one of Shakespeare's plays.  It also asks the students to compare western and non-western theatrical traditi...

Motivation in the Classroom

Image
Welcome Back!  This week we're looking at learner motivation.  Chapter Six of How People Learn II posits there are several ways learners can be motivated.  Among them are Values, Goals, and Effects of choice.  All three ways can be achieved by using digital tools in creative learning environments.  This is an effective approach to achieving ISTE Standard 6.a.  Goal setting is one of the ways students are motivated.

Week 2 - Authentic Intellectual Work

Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) is a relatively new framework that aims to enhance student learning by making student work more personal and meaningful.  It consists of three main criteria: Construction of Knowledge, Disciplined Inquiry, and Value Beyond School.  Construction of Knowledge consists of presenting students with a challenge that at first, they may not know how to approach and solve.  They must draw upon their experiences and skills from prior work as well as available resources to construct knowledge about the assignment.  This is in contrast to traditional teaching methods involving giving students information and asking them to repeat it on an assessment.  Disciplined Inquiry asks the students to dig deeper into a problem to achieve more than a cursory understanding  of the problem.  In addition, students must present their work through Elaborate Communication.  This involves providing context and meaning to their ...

Week 1 - Intro and Technology Standards

Hello and welcome to my blog!   My name is Paul Scott and I live in Folsom, CA.   You probably know us from our prison and the Johnny Cash song .   We also happen to have a local community college with a world-class theat re program .   As a member of the local community, I have been acting in shows there for about 12 years .   Some of my favorite shows include Macbeth , The Crucible , Spring Awakening , Romeo and Juliet , and You Can’t Take It With You .   Because of those experiences, I have made several good friends on the faculty .   I have been allowed to sit in on some classes and help students with their scene work.   Years ago, I was a high school social studies teacher and have always missed being in the classroom  with adolescent minds .   My friends on faculty at the local college know this and encouraged me to find a grad uate program that would allow me to join them in teaching theatre .   I found it righ...
